In late March 2024, I took a walk through Mizuki Shigeru Road in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture.

Mizuki Shigeru Road is a themed street based on the world of yokai (Japanese spirits and monsters) created by manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, best known for GeGeGe no Kitaro. The street is lined with about 180 bronze statues of yokai characters, welcoming visitors into their strange and quirky world.

Unfortunately, the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum was closed the day I visited, so I just strolled along the street and enjoyed the atmosphere there.

If you visit, I highly recommend walking the road once during the day – and then again after sunset. At night, the street is lit up, and the yokai take on a completely different vibe in the darkness. It’s a totally unique experience, and the contrast between day and night adds a lot to the charm.

Although the area was lit up, it was still quite dark overall, so I used a bright prime lens. I didn’t take notes of the statue names, so I’ll skip the explanations.
